Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve (WGP)

The Town of Yankeetown is responsible for the management, maintenance and funding of the Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve (WGP) pursuant to the acquisition agreement with the State of Florida and the Alachua Conservation Trust easement.  For more information, click the links below.

The History

Yankeetown purchased the property with a grant from the Florida Community Trust. The development of the land has been accomplished with grants from the Florida Recreational Development Assistance Program. Improvements on the land are   nearing completion.

Working with Southwest Florida Water Management District grants the teachers and middle school students from nearby Yankeetown School have cut the trails, put up directional posts, built informational kiosks at trail heads and other vital points and planted native gardens.

A renovated three-story, 4500 square foot educational resource center and nature museum has meeting rooms, educational displays and information on the Florida Nature Coast’s unique coastal wetlands. The Felburn Foundation has provided much financial assistance with the remodeling of the building. Renovation of this once residential structure to an educational and museum center in an ongoing long-term project.
